For the second time that day I fainted. The alarms that had been blearing in my ears one minute were non-existent the next, and the dark grey light that had been pushing through the vast windows disappeared. With the feeling of consciousness slipping my grasp I forgot who I was and where I had been.
“Shit, she’s like my old goat, faints at the slightest thing. ‘Sept one day he didn’t wake up again. ”
“Shut up man,” Hugh? “Nic? Can you hear me?” Hugh’s face slowly swam into focus. Behind the voices, in the distance, I could hear the alarms.
“What’s going on?” I tried to sit up but ended up having to lie back down.
“Don’t know yet. Can’t get outside though. The alarms in here have been turned off but they’re still on in the hall outside.” Hugh explained.
“The whole place seems to be on lock down. Can’t get anyone on the intercom or anything.” Noah said to me.
Stephen spoke next, “Are you alright?”
“How the fuck am I like your old goat, dude?” I groaned, squinting against the cold light. That made Tyler laugh.
“Yeah she seems to be working like normal.” Hugh grinned.
“Yeah I feel fine.” I confirmed, sitting up finally. “We can get Sam to come check me over when we can get hold of someone.”
It was about three hours before the alarms went off and our power came back on. In the mean time we watched the last of the movie and had a few games of pool. I was already pretty good at it but I could tell I was going to master it while we stayed in here. Then I wondered how long we’d be here. Would they let me raise the child, if it was healthy?
I dropped my pool cue, and had to steady myself on the table.
“Oh my god.” I breathed. The others were looking at me, concerned. “They’re going to take him.” That was the first time I’d used the word “Him” when talking about the child. “That’s why they got me pregnant. They’re breeding us.” A whole new kind of silence crashed over us. “They’re going to raise the children to harvest them like they did with us.” I looked up at all of them, who were now looking horrified. “We have to get out of here. After he’s born. We have to get Sam to help us escape. Maybe that’s why he said he couldn’t help us escape yet, because I had to get pregnant first.” The entrance of Sam, who looked puffed and stressed, interrupted our realizations.
“You alright Nic?” Sam asked, that was the first time he hadn’t called me Nicole. I was hoping he’d think the reason I suddenly looked so pale was because of my fainting spell earlier. “Heard you fainted again. You’ll need to come with me so I can examine you properly, although I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just the alarms that caused it. I almost fainted too,” He laughed weakly. “Do you normally faint like this?”
“Not like this,” I said. “I did faint more than normal though. Before, well.. Before all this.”
“Ok. Well actually, just come in here,” He gestured to the master bedroom, “And I can just have a look at you in here.”
He checked all my vitals, which he said were fine. The blood tests he’d taken earlier were also fine, except for some iron depletion. He gave me some iron pills, asked me a few questions about my diet and my sleep, and was about to leave before he asked me something else.
“How’s your sex life? Sorry, I have to ask.”
“Uh, pretty good I guess. Why?” I asked,
“Well sex is good for your health, and it’ll help you with your pain. If you have any more bad episodes I suggest getting Hugh to give you some TLC to relax your body, it’ll also release chemicals in your brain to give you natural pain relief, if you’re comfortable with that. It’ll also help make your pregnancy more comfortable. “
That made me blush. “Ok, thank you doctor.”
“Just give me a yell if you need anything else or if you have any more problems ok?” He started for the door.
“Wait,” I began, “What happened before, with the alarms?” It was still raining steadily outside.
“Um, well they didn’t tell us much. But word in the staffroom is that there was a lightening strike, and caused a tree to fall down and flatten a fence. A few people tried to escape and the security of the whole place was at risk. But I really shouldn’t be telling you this, I shouldn’t even know about it. Just keep it between you and the boys, ok?”
“Sure,” I said, “did they… Escape?” I asked, my heart speeding up. I was thinking of my child, my boy.
“Two of them did. The third one was shot. But the other two probably won’t get far, they can’t get off the island, not when everyone’s looking for them.”
I didn’t know what to think of that.
“Well, I have to go. Let me know if you need me. If you need to talk, I can listen. I know it can’t be easy, having a child at this age, and in here.” I looked at him, at his red hair and freckles, he’d look innocent and kind of dorky if he didn’t look so tired and stressed. He reminded me of one of those people whom you can just naturally get along with, and trust.
“Ok. I’ll remember that, Sam. Thank you.” I smiled up at him, and he said goodbye and left. I heard him say goodbye to the others before heading down the stairs. For the first time I really took note of the room. The wall furthest from the door, at the back of the room, and the wall to the left were made of glass, looking out into the wet trees, the rain dripping through the branches. It was very peaceful. The bed was vast, and a coffee colour. An expensive fur throw was spread out on top of the mattress. The walls were a beige colour, and a large, simple, smudgy painting of a grey sea hung on the wall. The furniture was white and beige also, the baby’s cot was white wood, with elaborate detail on the head and foot of the impressive bed. Cream lace draped around it, and a fine mosquito net was suspended above it. There was a silk nursing chair in the corner, beside a changing table. There was sufficient storage too. The whole room was very nice. Looking out the window I noticed a door leading outside, I don’t know how I had missed it. It was hidden well within the window. I stepped outside onto a stone veranda, and to my left, just out of site of the window was a huge hot tub. Tree branches draped and hung around the tub, creating a private, intimate area. A glass, waist high barrier separated the veranda from the forest. I stepped back inside and went into the rec room, and said,
“Hey guys, come check this out.”
Needless to say they were pretty thrilled. They let Hugh and I use it first, while they went back to the rec room. Hugh went down to the kitchen to grab some strawberries (a rare treat) and drinks, while I stripped off and got in. It was almost too hot, but my body adjusted and I sunk happily into the water. The cool mist brushed my face and it was pure bliss. Hugh appeared, not bothering to hide his appreciation for my naked body. He was holding a bowel of strawberries dusted with icing sugar in one hand, and two champagne flutes in the other.
“I found some alcohol-free bubbly. It actually tastes pretty good.” He placed them on the flat surface of the hot tub and stripped off too. His body was divine. As he stepped in, swearing at the heat, water rocked around my body. I looked down, my breasts were floating on the water. They were suddenly a lot bigger than they had been, and they weren’t small before. Hugh saw where I was looking and laughed, understanding my surprise.
“Pregnancy suits you.” He smiled his most sensual smile. He pulled me over onto his lap, and cradled me. Feeding me strawberries and pretend champagne, he bit his bottom lip. I kissed him lovingly, and we cuddled in the hot water, long after the strawberries and bubbly were gone. Eventually, he got up out of the water, and said,
“Wait right here.”
I murmured dreamily, as he disappeared and returned a moment later with two fluffy white bathrobes. As I stood up, he swaddled me in the soft fabric and, stepping out of the steamy water I went over to the edge of the veranda, grasping the glass barrier. He hugged me from behind, and I breathed deeply. Looking out into the tops of the trees, I leaned into him and closed my eyes. A moment later I was in his strong arms and being carried through the open glass door. Setting me on my feet, he pulled my robe off and his robe joined mine on the floor a moment later.
“The boys are down stairs, they won’t bother us.” He spoke, through kissing my lips.
“What did you tell them?” I asked, my voice thick with concern.
“Nothing,” he murmured in a silky voice, lowering me onto the fur throw. He kissed me, first slow and lovingly, and then he was kissing me with a sense of urgency, and hot passion. Skin on skin, he lay on top of me, moving his body against mine. I was breathing hard, and kissing him with as much heat and desire. Suddenly he flipped me over onto my belly, spread my legs, and entered me from behind. I let out a muffled yell, my face in a pillow, my hands grasping the sheets as if I was about to fall off the earth’s surface. He was moving in and out of me with increasing rhythm, until I was back in that familiar place. I felt like I was falling, I could feel the heat burning outwards from my groin, spreading through my body. As Hugh drove into me again and again, the heat increased until it was white hot. Great waves of pure pleasure rolled over me, until I felt I was bathing in it. I had never felt this much ecstasy. Hugh’s moaning was in my ear as he leaned down to kiss my shoulder blades, my neck. His fists were gripping the sheets beside mine, and his urgency peaked. He roared into my neck, biting me as he came inside me. I screamed into the sheets, pain and pleasure as one great sensation, completely taking over as I also came, doubling the pleasure I felt throughout my entire body. The waves of ecstasy did not cease, nor slow. Instead they continued to crash through me, over me. I convulsed with every orgasm, face buried in the pillow, still belly down on the fur coverlet. After a moment, Hugh pulled out of me and collapsed on the bed beside me, breathing hard. We clambered under the fur throw, and cuddled up together, our breathing slowing. After some time we drifted off into a light sleep. We didn’t wake till after dark.
I awoke feeling groggy with a fog in my brain. Groaning and feeling for Hugh amongst the soft fur on the bed I was disappointed to find he wasn’t there. It was mostly dark in the bedroom, except for a ghostly glow from the large windows. The rain had stopped and a fine mist lingered around the veranda. Sitting up I turned on a light and walked, naked, into the bathroom through a door. I took a long hot shower, taking the time to wash my hair and shave my legs, underarms and pubic hair, although I could’ve left it for another day or two. After finishing the shower I stepped out, dried myself and rubbed lotion into my skin. Naked, I walked over to the wardrobe, my other clothes were still in a suitcase at the bottom of the stairs by the door. I didn’t know what to find in the closet but I was pleasantly surprised. When we were brought here we were given a limited amount of clothing, but this was extensive. Dresses, jeans, blouses, shirts, skirts, jumpers, everything, stretched back for meters in a large walk in wardrobe. I pulled on some cute cotton underwear and wooly socks, followed by linen pajama shorts and a white cotton singlet and an expensive looking pale pink cashmere jumper. Feeling a lot more alive than before, I exited the bedroom and headed for the kitchen, warm light and cheerful voices floated up the stairs. Reaching the bottom of the stairs I looked up to see a happy sight. Hugh and Noah were plating up steak and vegetables while Tyler and Stephen stood on the other side of the bench. They were laughing at a joke Stephen had just made, the warm light making them glow. Hugh looked up, and his smile faded in awe for just a moment, then he beamed at me. “Just in time,” He said. “How was your nap?”
“Yeah, not bad.” I said, stretching and walking over to the kitchen. I helped Stephen set the table then before we sat down to eat, Noah pulled another bottle of imitation champagne out of the fridge.
“We should celebrate,” He began, then at my confused reaction added; “your pregnancy.”
“Oh,” I laughed, “right.”
“Looks like baby brain has set in already. Isn’t that not supposed to happen for months?” Tyler said.
“I’m just lucky I guess,” I said, grinning at him.
We were all in the booth now, sitting around the dining table. Tyler opened the champagne rather ceremoniously (the cork almost took out a light bulb and Noah had to duck out of it’s way) and poured out 5 glasses. He made a toast;
“To a healthy pregnancy”
“To a healthy pregnancy” we echoed, clinking our glasses with one another. We’d barely taken a sip of the champagne when the door opened.
They had come at last.
